Once learners have written their own version of the story, they can then perform it by creating their own cartoon. EXPLORING THE GRUFFALO - IDEA 9 - ORALLY PLANNING OUR OWN GRUFFALO STORYHere's idea 9 in the series linked to the Gruffalo. After learners have created images to structure their own story, they can now orally plan their story before they put pen to paper. This can be an incredibly powerful way to support learners with their writing by having their ideas recorded orally so when they write, their focus can be on structure; capital letters, full stops, handwriting etc.

Interviewing Storybook charactersIn this video, we look at another way to explore a character's feelings/motives/actions by interviewing them through ChatterPix Kids. This idea can easily be adapted to any other story and provides an accessible way for pupils to show empathy and understanding to characters.

Retelling Stories in KS1Here is a video exploring a simple but effective way for pupils in KS1 to retell stories you may be reading in class. The app Shadow Puppets Edu allows pupils to orally record over pictures giving them the opportunity to develop vocabulary and other key reading skills. We used this idea linked to the story Granny's Quilt in Year 2 but this can be easily adapted to any picture book.

Exploring a Character with Apple ClipsHere's another way to explore picture books with Apple Clips. Using the speech bubble effect and record button, children can think in role as a character exploring their thoughts, motives and feelings. Again, even though we use this idea with Flotsam, it can easily be adapted to any other picture book.

Creating Visual Poems with Apple ClipsHere is a creative idea for performing poetry. In the curriculum, this is a great way to cover the objective 'preparing poems and plays to read aloud and to perform, showing understanding through intonation, tone and volume so that the meaning is clear to an audience.'
