VOCABULARY IDEA 2 - WORDMAP VISUAL THESAURUS

Here's another great consumer app that can help children explore vocab by using this visual thesaurus. This is a paid app so if money is tight, it maybe worth downloading it on the teacher iPad and mirroring the results on your screen via airserver.

VOCABULARY IDEA 3 - EXPLORING ETYMOLOGY

 In the next video linked to developing vocabulary we explore etymology. In this video, we share a couple of useful consumer reference tools to help children explore and learn about the etymology of different words.

VOCABULARY IDEA 4 - HEADS UP TO DEVELOP TOPIC VOCAB

Here's another cracking idea to help children demonstrate their understanding of key vocab linked to specific topics/subjects. I have found over the years that certain drinking games also make useful games in the classroom and in this video we look at how the app Heads Up can challenge learners to demonstrate their understanding of key vocabulary.

VOCABULARY IDEA 5 - EXPLORING WORD CLASS IN ONENOTE

In this next video linked to Vocabulary, we look at exploring Word Class. In the video, I demonstrate how to scan text to import into one note before using tools that will identify the type of words within the text which can then be explored in more detail.

Siri to Support Vocab

Here are 10 ways in which you can utilise the Siri tool on your iPad or Macbook in class. If you don't have an iPad, most of these ideas work with an Alexa or Google Home.

VOCABULARY IDEA 7 - CREATING OUR OWN WORD SPIDER DIAGRAM

Here is another creative way for pupils to explore words and improve vocabulary. After using the visual thesaurus in idea 2, pupils can use the app popplet to create their own spider diagram exploring all the different elements of the word - synonyms, antonyms, roots, prefix/suffix and so much more.

VOCABULARY IDEA 8 - PRE READING VOCAB WORD CLOUDS

​Here's another idea linked to developing Vocabulary. This is an idea I normally use as a pre-reading task to allow learners to share with me unfamiliar words that I can input into my planning around vocabulary in our comprehension lesson.

VOCABULARY IDEA 9 - IDENTIFYING UNFAMILIAR WORDS IN TEXTS

Here's another idea linked to Vocabulary. In the previous video, we explored how as a class your pupils can inform you of what vocab is unfamiliar, in this video children can highlight new and unfamiliar words as an individual. It is also a great way for you to share texts with your class.

Here's another great way for pupils to build work knowledge to develop vocabulary. Building on the previous idea where pupils identified unknown words, this idea allows pupils to share their understanding once they learn the definition of these words.

As a way to embed key IT and digital literacy skills, pupils can explore all the different elements of a word from definition to an example sentence to synonyms and prefixes. Here's another way for learners to creatively share their understanding of words. After exploring different aspects of a words - definitions, roots, etymology etc they can create videos demonstrating their knowledge. This can then be shared with the class or the world!

In this next video linked to developing vocabulary, learners use drama to further explore words in particular emotions. To further develop writing, children think and act out emotions, capturing the actions, interactions and reactions which can be developed into writing through a show not tell approach.
